FG WORKING ON NEW DRAFT NATIONAL POLICY ON INFORMATION

The Minister of information and Culture, Mr. Lai Mohammed, disclosed this at the Stakeholders’ conference held in Kuru, Jos on Monday the 17th day of October. He said that the federal government is working meticulously to finalize the work on the new draft National policy on information.

Mr.Lai Mohammed was represented by Mr. Peter Dama, Director, press & publicity in the federal ministry of information at the conference with the theme “Towards a comprehensive National Communication Policy and Strategy”.
He said that the theme of the conference was appropriate with respect to the efforts of the administration in ensuring accountability, good governance, the rule of law, freedom of information etc.
According to him, the national Communication policy in Nigeria has not been properly advanced beyond the attempt in 1987 that produced a draft made to serve the former Ministry of Information. He said that the draft national policy management has been fashioned to provide a framework with which modern information systems and strategies can be developed for national development.
*It also foresees the emergency of a nation in constant dialogue with itself and the world.
* ”The main purpose of the policy is to provide regulation and functioning communication system in Nigeria with due attention to the challenges and opportunities ingrained in a globalizing world managed by digital technologies”, he said.
He said government is being hard working in order to meet up the June 2017. Digital switch over deadline, noting that the switch over was launched in Jos in April.   “Hopefully by December 2016, Digital switch over in Abuja will be launched”, he also said.
