Nigerian Lawmakers has advised the President to conduct population census in 2018

The Senate has directed the National Population Commission, the secretary to the Government of the federation and relevant agencies to make provisions with respect to population census in 2018. The last officialy conducted census in Nigeria was in 2006 and it was steped in controversy with allegations of fraud. Many citizens complained of being left out of the exercise. Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi expressed displeasure with the inability to conduct the exercise this year due to inadequate funding. Regardless of the above complaints, the Senate is mindful of the necessity of population Census to national planning and have asked the Executive to follow suite the procedure mapped out by UN by which the population census of a Country should be conducted after every 10 years. Most lawmakers emphasized the need for the provision of adequate funding in the 2017 budget to aid proper planning and a credible census exercise come 2018.
