As the Association of Bishop Court Students (ABCS), IMSU goes to the polls (though the exact date has not been fixed) different student politicians have once again made themselves available to vie for the various contestable posts, with more attention to the seat of leadership - The president.

Infoscope Media, led by Duru Victor, had an interview with one of the leading presidential aspirants, Comr. Ogunwa Kelvin Chukwubuike (popularly known as SSG) and the immediate past SSG of ABCS no doubt has the interest of Bishop's Court community at heart.

Below are excerpts from the cheeky interview:

Duru Victor: Tell us your name and alias
Comr. Kelvin: My name is Ogunwa Kelvin Chukwubuike popularly known as SSG.

Duru Victor: What is your vision for ABCS?
Comr. Kelvin: I am on a mission to build a community my people anticipate. A community where emphasis is laid on true leadership. I am out to bring true leadership to Bishop's Court community.

Duru Victor: What is your view on godfatherism? Does it also play out in ABCS politics?
Comr. Kelvin: Yes, it does play out in ABCS politics. I was threatened to step down for my opponent by his godfathers and this is why I'm calling on the students to come out en-masse and vote me in to quench the powers of the so-called godfathers.

Duru Victor: How do you hope to tackle the unfortunate security  challenge while consolidating on the efforts of the previous  administration?
Comr. Kelvin: The previous administration really did a good job as regards the security issue and my administration will do more!

Duru Victor: What will your administration do differently when given the students mandate?
Comr. Kelvin: We will do more. All by God's grace. Let's do more!

Security Operatives Displace Open Market Traders at IMSU

Security Operatives Displace Open Market Traders at IMSU

Over hundreds of open market traders among-st students engaged in the ongoing IMSU Post-Utme Commercial Registration were yesterday Tuesday, July 24 displaced when officials of Imo state government house arrived on the instance of the state government at the popular Miami market at IMSU Junction and Extension in owerri municipal council of Imo state demanding traders to concede the area.

The officials all decked in uniform, supervised the exercise at the various locations ensuring that none of the traders re-instates their business kiosks.

According to one of the officials who addressed the inquisitive traders, it was clear that they were acting on instructions given to them. We further investigated that a prior notice were issued to the traders asking the relocate to the campus Mini market at the school back gate.

Recall that few weeks ago, the state government’s bulldozers pulled down business structures and shanties at the school junction while structures at the school extension inaccessible by bulldozer were removed with sledge hammers in line with the urban renewal program of the state government to pave way for a modern market we reliably gathered.

Reacting on the issue, one Mr. Kingsley who is a trader at IMSU Extension gate said that the demolition notice issued was very short for them to look for another location to continue their business as there are no available spaces at the campus Miami market.

(Opinion) Call For Rebirth Of Investigative Journalism In Nigeria

(Opinion) Call For Rebirth Of Investigative Journalism In Nigeria

According to Mr. Raymond Ejikemeuwa, Journalists are any nation's best known Pests and like pests, they are also best known stingers. They sting the dormant coincidence of humanity until everyone is wide awake to a new concept of reality-perception. I am not a journalist myself. I am a Historian cum Diplomat  by training. There is a symbiotic similarity between History And International Studies and investigative journalists. Both have one common gene. And that is, investigative curiosity-the ceaseless search for the TRUTH. A true investigative journalist will not rest until the truth has been found and justice served if need be. Comparatively, these groups of professionals are like badgers in the sense that they dig deep into shady issues with relentless claws until all the dirt has been pushed out in the open. To the warped-minded, journalists are nightmares, but to be sincere, they are a shining touch.

I do not believe that Nigeria as a nation suffers from poverty of intellectualism in journalism profession. Rather, what I do perceive is this; journalists in Nigeria suffer from three major illnesses which are:  fear, laziness and a complex of high inferiority proportion. These three have pushed the discipline in the shadow of ineffectuality. No wonder some staring facts about Nigeria is better understood outside Nigeria. The pathological fear which the military has imposed on the psych of journalism in Nigeria is quite severe. No rational person can deny that military dictatorship ruined journalism in the country. The military’s unwritten law of terror was clear--if you write the truth, you die, if you speak out the truth, you die and if you investigate into the truth, you die. Journalist therefore became vulnerable objects of the military barbaric megalomania. Torture, kidnapping, prison, mysterious assassinations, bribery, threat to wife and children and exiles were the tools that killed investigative journalism in the country. Even today, in the so called Nigerian democracy, journalists are no much safe than they were in the military era. Nigerian journalists are still being assassinated, arrested, harassed and jailed for attempting to find out the truth.

The second problem with the country’s investigative journalism is laziness. The practice of journalism has become less of investigative and rational and more of sensational and rational. We all hear comments of how public funds are siphoned to private purses in Nigeria. Where are the facts? Where are the figures? Where are the names involved? Billion of Nigerian stolen money seat in oversea banks. Who are these foreign collaborators? Where do they live? What are their names? What are the names of these international financial institutions that help Nigerian launderers and thieves? What dates and times did these shady transactions take place? Fact-finding are tedious. And Nigerian investigative journalism is still too infantile to handle the complexities of the search for the truth. It is easy to presume than to investigate. It is more easy to be sensational than to be rational. It is easier to preach than to teach. It takes enormous energy, resources, experience, hard work, time, stress, travels, network, patient and even necessary camouflage to get to the root of issues. A good investigative journalist could work a single issue for years yet with stern endurance. Culturally, Nigerians like titles and it is not a surprise that so many people refer to themselves, professionally, as journalists. And my question would be ‘apart from commenting on hot political sensational issues what else can you do as a journalist?

Lastly, investigative journalism in Nigeria also suffers from a high level of inferiority complex. Due to a serious lack in Africa’s scientific culture inquisitiveness which automatically necessitates quality journalism practice, our investigative journalists are often timid compared to the west. Granted, the west should not be the parameter to measuring the Nigeria journalism competence. However, one would not fail to recognize their level of scientific approach and transparence within the practice. As always, it takes, not the Nigerian journalists, but those from the west to give specific standard reports on the Nigerian human right violation, child abuse, corruption, environmental degradation in the Delta, public mismanagement and so on and so forth. Most of the times, it is after the western professional journalist must have reported on such issue at our own backyard that we even became aware of them and begin the usual belated reactions. It also takes the western journalist to come to Nigeria and make a documentary titled “Welcome to Abuja” to expose the state of dehumanizing poverty all over Nigeria. It is not only Nigerian journalism that suffers timidity complex; it is African journalism as a whole. It is embarrassing that most of the INFORMATION I have about situations in Congo, Rwanda, Somalia, Chad and so many other countries in Africa did not come from African media but from the western media outlets. Granted that some of those reports are presented with biases.

Certain things would never cease to puzzle my mind. Western journalists could come to Africa (Nigeria) and find out facts and report them in the media, but Nigerian journalists can hardly go into investigative field-work to find out facts in the western socio-political, economic and cultural settings. And who said inferiority is not the issue here. How many of the professionals within the practice could travel around the world (to other countries) questioning high profile figures, investigating and reporting on extremely sensitive socio-political, economic and cultural issue of abuse, corruption, environmental damages, corporate greed, medical malpractices and so on and so forth. Majority of the Nigerian (undocumented) immigrants overseas are abused and neglected. How many of our professional journalists dare to find out what these stories are. The answer is this, not one journalist. Nigerians have been executed massively in places like Saudi Arabia, Libya, China, Indonesia and so many other places around the world. What are the facts and figures in these cases? How did the government of these countries respect or abuse the human rights of these faceless folks. How were their trials conducted? Did they have a just, free and fair trial? And this tells the world how much does a Nigeria life worth. If investigative journalists brings graphic and disturbing cases in the open, the government even as insensitive as the Nigeria, would react. Details of issues of abuse of Nigerians should be fresh focus for the Nigerian journalism.

Not any person who can write is a journalist. Journalism is a unique discipline. And to claim a journalist means one has undergone a professional training and is competent. The practice of journalism goes beyond writing. And I think there should be a redefinition of journalism in Nigeria or rather a rebirth of the practice to meet up international standards. For a country as diverse as Nigeria, the function of investigative reporting cannot be underestimated in the positive transformation.

Opinion: Effect Of Cohabitation In Tertiary Institution By Raymond Ejikemeuwa

Opinion: Effect Of Cohabitation In Tertiary Institution By Raymond Ejikemeuwa

The increase in the number of undergraduate students and the inability of the school authorities to provide adequate hostel accommodation has led to cohabitation among undergraduate students of some public universities.

In university campuses across Nigeria,it is a common phenomenon for male and female students to rent off-campus apartments just  for  comfort and for  ‘privacy’ as one of my friends would say.

Living in those houses alone is now a thing of the past as some students want to experience marital life before leaving campus and to get married proper.

This led to the ‘undergraduate Di naNwanyi’ which means a male and female student living in their rented apartment .This ‘couple life’ makes the male student assume the role of the husband and the female-wife.

It is expected for students in tertiary institutions to know their left from their right. To this end, they have the freedom to make self-decisions that has to do with their feelings and emotions, and maybe their lives in general.

About 15% of some students in Nigerian tertiary institutions sponsor themselves, while about 85% are sponsored by parents or guardians. These parents should mount surveillance to monitor and check their ward’s exuberant actions and decisions.

Cohabitation seems to be a very popular but worrisome concept in our institutions today. The male and female students renting and residing in the same apartment as though they were married. They do all sort of domestic activities together such as bathing, cooking, taking joint decisions, sleeping and in most cases operate a joint account.

Some have given a smattering justification for this couple’s life on campus expressing that it helps to pool resources such as food stuffs and money together from the wealthy partners  to enable them make ends meet in school. Others said that cohabitation helps them gain experience on how to handle marital life, check infidelity, aid intimacy and cement the relationship subject to formal approval by their parents.

The argument above may not in any way stand to verify cohabiting by campus lovers. In Nigeria, such practice is culturally and religiously unacceptable as it is contrary to the concept of marital rites and blessings.

Cohabitation is mostly practiced by premature and ineligible persons and in some cases, are unprepared for long-lasting union.Common deception!Without incertitude, cohabitation is a lead-way to sexual interaction of premarital sex which can lead to early or unwanted pregnancy.

Sure enough is the fact that, not needed pregnancy is the staircase to abortion domain.Abortion is the sliding route to death or organ damages which may in many cases result to barrenness.

According to Miss Tricia Igbe,a student of the Delta State Polytechnic,Ozoro,”It is biblically and morally wrong. It leads to unwanted pregnancy, abortion, infections and emotional trauma especially for ladies who may suddenly be jilted by the man involved.”She further opined that ladies are always the worst hit whenever such relationship hits the rock”.

Cohabitation on campus also affects the academic performance of those involved. The campus girl who has been saddled with the burden of cooking for his campus husband, washing all his clothes and other unwanted matrimonial functions may not be at her best in academics.

It is alarming that most students spend their school fees to carter for their so-called school husband or wife, and end up spending extra year in school.

Our society is really sick courtesy of those living in it.These students collect house rents from unsuspecting (and sometimes, struggling) parents and end up cohabiting.

In summary, before you agree to move in and live with a guy on campus, consider the reason why you are in school in the first place. What image would you be creating about yourself? Can this guy marry you in case he impregnates you or would you resort to series of abortions like many other girls before you? What advice will you give your children in future concerning this kind of things? After school what next? Will the relationship lead you anywhere?

Yes,this part is now referring to the females.I didn’t plan it that way.Maybe it is because they are the worst hit by the grave consequences of illicit sexual relationships. They are the ones that turn out to be the sore losers in the end. They call it school life but they don’t realize how idiotic they have been till it is too late.

It is a pure ‘misplacement of purpose’ if you think that the reason why you are in school is to get the husband-and-wife experience,to see what it feels like for the guy to provide the money for food and for the girl to go to the market for food stuffs and cook.

It is true that your admission has given you unlimited freedom. It is true that your parents are not there to caution you.But what about giving your womanhood respect and protecting your dignity? What about living in such a way as to have a positive story to tell the next generation(including your children)without a prick of conscience?

In conclusion, for parents who shake their heads to pity those who cohabit whenever they read articles like this,a smart surveillance may reveal to them that their own innocent and sober looking wards also engage in this practice.Hence, there is an urgent need for parents, stakeholders et alia to mount a campaign against campus lover’s cohabitation. It is really doing more harm than good to the lives of those involved.
This practice must be admonished.

Campus Gossip: I didn't Just Decide To Be Rapper, It Inborn In Me - Rehab says

Campus Gossip: I didn't Just Decide To Be Rapper, It Inborn In Me - Rehab says

 Imsu Elijah

Fast rising act Ekwere Michael Nnamdi, a 400L student of Optometry department in Imo State University known also as 'Rehab' said that rapping is a gift to him by God.

In a recent chat, the "Over Sabi" crooner causing wave in the campus Music revealed hand full of things about himself, when and how he started music. Read through this post to know more about the next big headache in the Nation entertainment industry.

How did the stage name "REHAB" came to fancy?

“Well I was making use of the name (Michael ekna) at first when i was in junior secondary school, sometimes people do come to me and when am done rapping for him or her that person becomes so happy ..So one day I came across the word rehab Which means bringing something or someone  back to its normal state .. And I come to think of it , since people do meet me to rap for them just to make them happy ..then I should be a rehab in the music industry”

When did you start music?

“Well , some people will say they started music at the age of this and at the age of that, But to me I started music from mama’s womb. Officially I started music when I was in my senior secondary school I guise probably at the age of 17-19 years old and that was when I started visiting the studio”

Who is your role model?

“J Cole is my role model, I so much love him with Passion, he inspires me a lot and I also love his life style,  He is the reason why my love for rap music increased. Yes he is my number one role model but I wouldn't tell you that I am only inspired by J Cole, Kendrick Lamar and drake are artist I do see as my role model. I will also love to recognized artist like lucky dube, the game ,Bob Marley, 2face ,big seun ,t.I, drake ,eriga ,2 PAC, notorious b.i.g lilwayn and lots more they  have all also contributed to the growth of my musical career by inspiring me”

Have you ever experienced stage freight and how did you come over it?

“Oh my God, Severely I have experienced that even up till now I do experience stage freight. But not every time. You know, I was a very shy type when I was a teenager To even contribute little to the answer to your question, I was an altar boy in my church (Catholic church) but I never served a  mass because of stage freight. I came over stage freight when I realized that each time i am on stage performing , once I drop a punch line or good lyrics and rhymes  or sweet melody and sweet musical line that the crowd love so much they all  scream and once they all scream and sound happy, stage freight leaves my body and soul . What I now do to come over stage freight ..is to work hard , study my fans, show and different set of crowd or audience  just to know what they want, I deliver it to them so that their joy, screams , hailing and happiness can give me confidence to overcome stage freight on stage.”

What's the best thing a fan has ever done to you?

“Well I have this fan that do Spend his time to design my pictures and adding some of my lyrics on the pic and then send it to me. He also do post it on his social media account saying nice things about me and also tag me . each day I receive several pictures containing my lyrics this is just how passionate a fan can be sometimes”

What inspires you to sing?

“I always want my today to be better than yesterday, i didn't just decide to be rapper, it inborn in me. if something must inspire me, it should be my experiences in life”

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

“Only God knows the answer to this question, I only believe that God is preparing a better place and a better platform and a better crown in the music industry for me”

Apart from music, what other thing do you do with your leisure time?

“For now , I am a student Combining school and my musical career is like serving two masters at a time which people do think it’s impossible to do that.  I don't think I have any leisure time because every single day i keep myself busy with music or studies while during the weekend I do go to shows, In fact I have no leisure time because I have no rest for my brain”

In conclusion, what do you have to say to your fans and followers?

Oh my God, I wonder what I can do without my fans, I call them my motivators. I wish I can just have a day interaction with my fans they are the reason why I am working so hard CU's I don't want to let them down, i don't, want to disappoint them or probably waist all the effort they have applied to see me come this far,  I also want to thank them for always being there for me gradually we are getting to  the  destination by Gods grace. I love you all with all my heart”.

Campus Gossip: "Everything In Life Is All About Talent" - Mc Badmouth

Mc Badmouth whose real name is Ojilere Chikemdi Benjamin hails from Imo state from the honorable Department of Industrial Mathematics, 400level, Imo State University has said that everything in life is all about talent.

Former Big Brother Naija Housemate ‘Nina’ Alongside Miss BBB Meets IMSU Vice Chancellor

Imsu Elijah

Former big brother Naija housemate, Nina Chinonso Onyenobi has returned back to school. She met with the University Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Mrs.) Victoria Adaobi Obasi alongside Lilian Nkechi, Winner Miss Big, Bold and Beautiful (BBB) recently in her office.

Recall that while Nina was in the big brother house, Prof Adaobi Obasi reportedly said she (Nina) will undergo Moral Rehabilitation upon return. This she said is to purge her from any bad influences she might have picked up while featuring on the BBN show.

Below are reactions from online users on the visit:

hope the VC talked to her that "she needs to undergo MORAL REHABILITATION"as once carried by many dalies
