ASUU, FG REACHES AN AGREEMENT

After a 14-hours closed door meeting, the Federal Government & the Academic Staff Union of Universities reached an agreement to set up a 7 man committee that would be in charge of the processes towards actualisation of its 2009 agreement.

The meeting was a step forward towards tackling the issues that led to the ongoing strike.

Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities embarked on an indefinite strike on 13th August, 2017, due to failure of government to implement the agreement reached with the Union in 2009.

ASUU’s demands include arrears and implementation of Earned Academic Allowances, fractionalization of salaries in Federal Universities, release of fund for revitalisation of public universities as spelt out in the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding, among others.

The Minister of Labour & Employment, Mr Chris while talking, described the 7 man committee, stating that the ministry would be represented by 3 people, ASUU by 3 people and the FG would be represented by 1 person who would be the Chairman of the committee.
He stated that the Education sector contributes a lot to the development of Nigeria as a whole, therefore should not be halted by anything.

Also, speaking, ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, said that ASUU and the government had reached an agreement on their demands with the Federal Government.
"The proposal reached with the FG would be taken back to our members and would be discussed at the National Executive Council meeting"....he said.

We would get back to the federal government in one weeks time. Also I would advice that the FG should find long lasting solution towards saving our educational sector.
