UPDATE NIPOFERD TROPISYMPOSIUM 2017 — 3RD PRESENTATION

NIPOFERD TROPISYMPOSIUM 2017

3rd Presentation — Dr. N. O. Aladi
PHYSIOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PALM KERNEL CAKE AND STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING ITS NUTRITIVE VALUE FOR POULTRY PIGS...

Limitations in Monogastric feeding...
— High content of cell wall constituents (Crude Fibre 14-28%, NDF 60-80%, ADF 35-50%, Lignin 10-18% DM).

— Fibre is very resistant to Monogastric enzymes (Sundu & Dingle, 2003).

— It is dry & gritty.

— PKC Maillard reaction (the reaction of mannose with amino groups) may occur due to heat application during processing(Sundu et al 2003).

— Variable shell content due to unregulated local processing (Aladi, 2016)

Our Concern;
1) The inclusion of PKC in Poultry diets has been largely driven by need to decrease cost of production caused by escalating cost of maize and other grains due to competitive demand as human food.

— No improvement in performance, carcass and meat quality is yet to be reported.
— Though increased carcass flavour and hedonic rating scores was reported by Okeudo et all (2005), but it did not seem to translate to increased economic value.
